why moment with me

To build momentum.

"Toward what?" you might ask? In general, enjoying your life. Specifically — what are you struggling with? Where do you find yourself stuck, having difficulties, making or breaking habits? Do you know (or perhaps not quite know) the thing you could do to feel good, yet come upon blockages when you try to implement changes?

Rather than the sticks and carrots of accountability — the extrinsic reward of punishments and rewards, which ultimately decrease motivation — I prefer the intrinsic reward of feeling good, and I'd love to help you develop that capacity in yourself.

Feeling good doesn't mean being happy all the time. It feels good to know you're capable of meeting life's challenges, nimble with changes, agile with obstacles.

Let's explore shifting from perceiving obstacles to feeling excited about tackling the obstacle course of your life.

"The way you do anything is the way you do everything."
a framework for finding your way

Sense-making. Meaning-making. Choice-making.

the "what?"
Sense-making

It takes all of our senses to make sense — to know, even if incompletely, what we're dealing with. It doesn't always make sense how we "know" things, but understanding is vital.

the "so what?"
Meaning-making

It's incredibly subjective what each "what" means to us as individuals. But if we don't know what something means to us, we're less likely to have agency and options to make choices we feel good about.

the "now what?"
Choice-making

Making a choice happens internally but influences how you exist. It conveys an energetic, determines how you spend your time and resources, informs who — and what — you spend time with.

how i live it

A micro-philosophy in motion.

I write from personal experience. I love to learn, but information on its own doesn't do it for me — I synthesize it into knowledge, experiment, observe, and only then does it become wisdom. Here's the shape of how I move through it.

the cycle
breathe.

insights are like the out-breath ("oh, I get it!"), inspiration is the in-breath (like a gasp — "oh, I could…"). once i know what i can do…

enact.

do that experiment, the one that will inform me about what the insight means to me, how it impacts me, what it informs for me.

play.

let myself relax a little; it's not all existential. allow time for the imagination to be sparked and let it guide toward the next elegant action.

the qualities
spark.

we all have one. it's what makes us unique, even as we're part of a greater whole.

juice.

that yummy feeling when you're in flow, or sparring with a worthy opponent, or deep into dialogos. it's got energy, and we easily lean in for more.

crunch.

the thing you don't want to do but think would probably be good for you. shadow work. challenging conversations. the obstacle course of your life — the challenge part of you is leaning into anyway.

about

Hi, I'm Mari.

Mari Budlong

I find immense joy in meaning and integrity. I find meaning in the moments, and accumulate a sense of integrity through values-aligned action and playful experimentation. Momentum is built in the accumulation of joy and experiential wisdom.

To me, momentum is accountability reframed. Rather than the sticks and carrots of accountability, I prefer the intrinsic reward of feeling good — and the joy it brings me to (try to) spread that goodness wherever I go.

I think of momentum-building like learning to swing. At first it's not necessarily fun, and can even be frustrating. But over time we get to experience, little by little, the pleasure of the back-and-forth, noticing the pauses at either end, feeling the rush of movement. Or maybe you're not into swinging.

It's also like building a snowman. You make a small snowball and carefully roll it along the ground, packing it down, shaping it, continuing to add snow until it's just the right size. And maybe you don't like metaphors… in which case I'm probably not your gal.

I'm a mother to four amazing humans; I'm an Army veteran; I'm a sister, friend, experimenter. I love a good laugh as well as a good cry (and sometimes they happen together). I love to share food, think (it's a full-body activity for me), hike, sing to myself, and be a multi-faceted human who can't possibly be revealed in a description like this.

in their words

"It felt like her listening was grounded and heart centered, allowing me to freely share my vision. She was able to ask questions that exposed places where my plans were less than true to my original vision. These insights gave me confidence and momentum and cleared my view so the next pragmatic steps occurred fluidly and spontaneously following the call."

— Aidan T.

"Her energy is playful and she is an excellent listener — a powerful blend. I was impressed by the insightful questions she asked, which led me to new realizations."

— Dave S.

"Mari takes the varied pieces of my random thoughts, deliberations, enquiries, attempts at untangling the complexities of personal and family life, and assembles them into a much clearer picture of this jigsaw puzzle of life for me. Every time she sharply and succinctly reduces my ramblings to essential nuggets of words, which I take home as gifts."

— Angie M.
